A group of violent Birmingham carjackers have had their prison terms almost doubled after West Midlands Police and the CPS appealed the leniency of their sentences.

Carjackers Sarweeth Rehman, 22, and Hussun Ashraf, 22, were convicted for assaulting motorists with golf clubs, baseball bats or metal bars, before stealing the victims' high-end cars.

A third man, Adam Azal, 22, was also arrested for his role in using a tow truck to steal seven cars.

Originally, Rehman was jailed for five years and nine months, Ashraf for six years and four months, and Azal for three years and ten months.

However, West Midlands Police prosecutors took the case to the Appeals Court, arguing that the nature of the offences warranted longer prison terms for each culprit.

Subsequently, judges increased their prison sentences to ten years, eleven and a half years, and six years respectively.

The three carjackers will not be able to appeal this decision.
