Lambert, who left Villa Park in 2015 after three years in charge, will replace Paul Hurst at the Tractor Boys.

His appointment is a controversial one, due to a previous spell in charge of Ipswich’s rivals Norwich City.

Lambert said: “"I can't wait to get going and I'll be using all my experience - and give everything I've got for Ipswich.”

Since departing Villa, Lambert has gone on to manage Blackburn Rovers, Wolves and Stoke City.
