Thousands of people are expected to protest in Birmingham’s **Victoria Square** this Friday (20th September) as part of a ‘[Global Climate Strike’](https://globalclimatestrike.net/?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk).

The protest, [which begins at 11am](https://ukscn.org/events/birmingham-global-climate-strike/?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk), has been organised by the **UK Student Climate Network** — a group of young people mostly under the age of 18 taking to the streets of the UK to protest about the government’s lack of action to tackle climate change.

The UKSCN has grown rapidly this year with the number of protestors [growing fivefold between February and March](https://ukscn.org/about-us/?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk). The group [say](https://ukscn.org/about-us/?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk) their inspiration comes from young climate activist Greta Thunberg whose “speeches and ideas are central to our mission”.

The group are urging adults to take part in the protest and have invited schools and workplaces resistant to the strike to contact the UKSCN as they believe “that everyone should be able to strike freely”.

Politician **Preet Kaur Gill** and activist **Salma Yaqoob** will also be joining the procession.

Protests will be taking place throughout the UK on Friday 20th September. You can [find information about protests in your area on the UK Student Climate Network events page](https://ukscn.org/events/?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk).

Birmingham Eastside will be reporting from the protests tomorrow - watch out for updates on the site and [on our Twitter](https://twitter.com/bhameastside?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk) and [Facebook accounts](https://www.facebook.com/birminghameastside/).
