The former Chelsea man donned the armband for the first time as Villa went down 2-1 in a friendly at Shrewsbury Town.

The game was goal-less until the last 15 minutes when Zak Jules put the hosts in front.

Shrewsbury doubled their lead when Arthur Gnahoua fired home from the edge of the area.

Villa did manage to pull a goal back in the dying moments when Henri Lansbury netted from the penalty spot.
