After **50 years** of service, the **Perry Barr flyover** will be closed to the public as part of plans to regenerate the area.

Here is what you need to know about the closure of the Perry Barr flyover.

## Why is the Perry Barr flyover closing?

The flyover is closing as [part of £500m of investment made to redevelop Perry Barr](https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/info/50253/perry%5Fbarr%5Fregeneration/2219/perry%5Fbarr%5Fregeneration%5Foverview?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk).

This includes a new housing development on the old Birmingham City University City North Campus and a renovated Alexander Stadium, which will be the main site of the **2022 Commonwealth Games** in Birmingham.

## How will the Perry Barr flyover be demolished?

Demolishing the flyover will be done in two phases. The [first phase](https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/info/50253/perry%5Fbarr%5Fregeneration/2221/transport%5Fimprovements%5Fin%5Fperry%5Fbarr/4?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk), which has been completed in December, was centred on creating a new temporary road layout near Harrier Way and structural works on Birchfield Road.

Work has already started on the second phase of the flyover, which will be completed in May 2021\. A date has been set provisionally to [demolish the flyover on the weekend of the 5-8 February 2021](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/final-rush-hour-looms-landmark-19559025?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk).

## What will be replacing the flyover?

Replacing the flyover will be a [new dual carriageway](https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/A34PerryBarr?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk), putting all traffic along the A34 at ground level between the One Stop Shopping Centre and the new Perry Barr housing development.

With the removal of the Perry Barr flyover, this means that work will start to build a new [Sprint bus route](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/perry-barr-flyover-turns-50-19337746?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk) along the A34 in March 2021.

Alongside this, there will be improvements made to the [A34 corridor for walking and cycling](https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/info/50253/perry%5Fbarr%5Fregeneration/2221/transport%5Fimprovements%5Fin%5Fperry%5Fbarr?ref=birminghameastside.co.uk), as well as a new railway station for Perry Barr.
